Dear Diary

I think I found the silver lining, it's too early to be sure, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Oli

Chapter 16

Our connection soon blossomed into a beautiful romance when Nick finally mustered the courage to ask me out. It was unexpected, but sparks had been flying between us for weeks and I found myself eagerly accepting his invitation. Our dates were like fairytales, each one more enchanting than the last. But our relationship reached a new level when he invited me for a sleepover at his place one weekend. The mere thought of staying overnight with him sent a shiver of excitement and anxiety down my spine. Memories from past relationships flooded my mind, causing a wave of concern to wash over me. Despite these unwelcome flashbacks, I couldn't resist taking this next step with Nick.

On the day of my arrival, I showed up at his doorstep with a duffle bag slung over my shoulder. As I gazed upon his massive house, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by its grandeur. The stark contrast between our upbringings was now undeniable. His parents, exuding wealth and privilege, initially made me feel like an outsider. Before Nick could even lead me to his bedroom, his sister approached me with practised grace. From her perfectly straight posture to her designer clothes, everything about her exuded sophistication and superiority. Her piercing gaze and sharp tone conveyed unspoken disapproval as she bombarded me with questions. "So, Oli, where are you from originally?" she probed, her words dripping with judgment.

“Uh,” I fumbled before she quickly interrupted me.

"I bet life's pretty different where you come from, huh?" She looked me up and down.

Nick, sensing my discomfort, attempted to steer the conversation to safer waters. "Hey, let's not grill Oli.” “C’mon.” I’ll show you, you’re room.” Nick ushered me up the stairs. I could feel his sister's eyes on me with every step but I kept my own eyes forward.

I was surprised when the room I was staying in wasn’t his.

“I’m not staying in your room?” I asked, letting my bag fall to the floor. My room had a beautiful big king-sized bed with the most beautiful linen I’d ever seen. each bedside table had a jug of water and three little love heart-shaped chocolates. It was like a hotel. At the end of the bed was a rolled-up towel and a little tray with more chocolates, a hair tie and a few other little gifts along with a note. It was the most beautiful gift I’d been given at a sleepover.

“My parents are weird about kids staying in the same room. They want everyone to be safe.” He shrugged.

They want everyone to be safe. The words played on repeat in my mind. I hadn’t had anyone besides my parents care about my safety before. It felt weird and nice and overwhelming.

He interrupted my thoughts, “Want a cigarette?”

I nodded, following him back down the stairs and outside. He pulled out a Winfield Blue and lit it up, passing it to me.
